Key Reflection

In Numbers 22:22, Balaam's early morning departure to meet with the princes of Moab sets the stage for a significant spiritual encounter. For the ancient Israelite audience, this act was not just a practical preparation for travel but also symbolized Balaam's willingness and determination to engage in what would become a pivotal moment of divine intervention. This scene contrasts sharply with Balaam’s eventual reluctant obedience to God’s will, highlighting the surprising twists that await even those who initially resist divine revelations.

The angel -i. e., the Angel that led the Israelites through the wilderness (compareNumbers 20:16and references), and subsequently appeared as the Captain of the Lord’s host to JoshuaJoshua 6:13. In desiring to curse Israel, Balaam was fighting against Israel’s Leader. The presence of the Angel in his path was designed to open his eyes, blinded by sin, to the real character of his course of conduct.
