Matthew 28:16

"So they took the money and did as they were told. This saying was spread abroad among the Jews, and continues until today."

Key Reflection

In Matthew 28:16, following Jesus' resurrection, the disciples encounter him in Galilee, an important location symbolizing new beginnings and fulfillment of prophecy (compare Deuteronomy 30:1-5). Their initial response is mixed; while some bow down to worship Jesus, others are skeptical. This event highlights the divide between faith and doubt among the apostles, a tension that would persist in their post-resurrection experiences. The broader context suggests that this scene of mixed reactions foreshadows the ongoing nature of belief and disbelief among God's people, as the saying about their actions spread throughout Jewish communities and remains relevant to this day.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

Verse 16. Then the eleven disciples. Judas was dead, leaving but eleven of the original number of the apostles. Into a mountain where Jesus had appointed them. This appointment is recorded in Mt 26:32. On what particular mountain this was is not known. It is probable that Jesus, when he made the appointment, specified the place, which has been omitted by the evangelists. Matthew has omitted many appearances which Jesus made to his disciples, which have been recorded by Luke, John, and Paul. See the harmony of the resurrection at the end of the chapter.
