Matthew 25:11

"While they went away to buy, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went in with him to the wedding feast, and the door was shut."

Key Reflection

In Matthew 25:11, Jesus uses a parable about ten virgins waiting for the bridegom's arrival at a wedding feast. The five wise virgins were prepared with extra oil and entered the celebration when the bridegroom came, while the unprepared five found the door shut as they tried to enter later. This narrative highlights the importance of being ready and vigilant, reflecting the eschatological theme of Christ’s second coming and the need for believers to be prepared for his judgment and the kingdom of heaven. The cultural context of this parable is rooted in ancient Middle Eastern customs where weddings were grand events with specific roles and preparations expected from all participants, emphasizing the significance of readiness and responsibility in faith.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

Verse 11. Open to us. This is not to be understood as implying that any will come after the righteous shall be admitted into the kingdom, and claim admission then. It is a part of the parable to illustrate the general truth inculcated, or to prepare the way for what is afterwards said, and keep up the narrative, and make it consistent. {f} "saying, Lord" Mt 7:21-23; Heb 12:17 __________________________________________________________________
