Matthew 22:18

"Tell us therefore, what do you think? Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?”"

Key Reflection

In Matthew 22:18, Jesus presents a tricky question to the Pharisees and Herodians, challenging their loyalty and faithfulness to both religious law and Roman authority. This inquiry is set within the broader context of first-century Palestine under Roman occupation, where taxes were a contentious issue. By asking whether it is lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, Jesus forces them into a dilemma: answering affirmatively could alienate his support among the Jewish people, while denying it would jeopardize their relationship with the occupying power and potentially lead to arrest or execution.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

Verse 18. Jesus perceived their wickedness. This must have been done by his power of searching the heart, and proves that he was omniscient. No mere man has the power of discerning the motives of others. Tempt ye me. Try me, or endeavour to lead me into difficulty by an insidious question. Hypocrites. Dissemblers. Professing to be candid inquirers, when their only object is to lead into difficulty. See Barnes "Mt 6:2". __________________________________________________________________
