Matthew 21:40

"So they took him and threw him out of the vineyard, then killed him."

Key Reflection

In first-century Palestine, a vineyard was not just a place for growing grapes; it was also a common setting for social and political parables. When Jesus spoke of throwing someone out of the vineyard and killing him, his listeners would have immediately recalled the violent conflicts between different Jewish factions and their struggles against Roman authorities. This scene vividly portrayed the fate that awaited those who opposed or rejected the prophetic message—symbolizing how even those in positions of authority could ultimately face condemnation and death for their actions.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

Verse 40. When the lord therefore, etc. Jesus then asked them a question about the proper way of dealing with those men. The design of asking them this question was that they might condemn themselves, and admit the justice of the punishment that was soon coming upon them. __________________________________________________________________
