Matthew 20:17

"So the last will be first, and the first last. For many are called, but few are chosen.”"

Key Reflection

In Matthew 20:17, Jesus is speaking to his disciples about the nature of service and divine selection as they approach Jerusalem, the center of religious and political authority in first-century Israel. The statement that “the last will be first, and the first last” challenges traditional notions of status and reward by suggesting that those who are lowly and unassuming will ultimately receive honor and blessing, while those who claim exalted positions may find themselves relegated to lower places. This teaching aligns with Jesus' emphasis on humility and his role as a servant-king, contrasting sharply with the expectations and behaviors of the religious leaders of his time.

This journey was from Galilee, on the east side of Jordan, probably to avoid the Samaritans, Mt 19:1. At this time he was on this journey to Jerusalem, probably not far from Jericho. This was his last journey to Jerusalem. He was going up to die for the sins of the world. Took the twelve disciples apart. All the males of the Jews were required to be at this feast, Ex 23:17. The roads, therefore, on such occasions, would probably be thronged. It is probable also, that they would travel in companies, or that whole neighbourhoods would go together. See Lu 2:44.
