Matthew 2:13

"Being warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they went back to their own country another way."

Key Reflection

In Matthew 2:13, when the wise men are warned in a dream not to return to Herod, their decision to go back to their own country by another route highlights the secrecy and danger surrounding Jesus' early life. This action would have underscored the threat posed by Herod's murderous intent, reflecting the historical context of Roman rule and the fear it instilled in those loyal to God’s chosen king. The original audience would have understood this as a pivotal moment illustrating divine protection and the strategic importance of avoiding Herod's clutches.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

Verse 13. The angel. See Mt 1:20. Flee into Egypt. Egypt is situated to the south-west of Judea, and is distant from Bethlehem perhaps about sixty miles. It was at this time a Roman province. The Greek language was spoken there. There were many Jews there, who had a temple and synagogues; and Joseph, therefore, would be among his own countrymen, and yet beyond the reach of Herod. The jurisdiction of Herod extended only to the river Sihon or river of Egypt, and of course, beyond that, Joseph was safe from his designs. For a description of Egypt, See Barnes "Isa 19:1".
