Matthew 14:32

"Immediately Jesus stretched out his hand, took hold of him, and said to him, “You of little faith, why did you doubt?”"

Key Reflection

In Matthew 14:32, Jesus demonstrates his divine authority by immediately responding to Peter’s crisis of faith after he temporarily lost control and started sinking in the stormy sea. The historical context indicates that this event follows shortly after Jesus fed the five thousand, confirming his power as a messianic figure. For the original audience, such a display would have underscored Jesus’ role as a divine savior who not only performs miracles but also offers reassurance and correction to his disciples, reinforcing their trust in him even amidst moments of doubt.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

Verse 32. And when they were come into the ship, the wind ceased. Here was a new proof of the power of Jesus. He that has power over winds and waves has all power. John adds, Joh 6:21 that the ship was immediately at the land whither they went;--another proof, amidst this collection of wonders, that the Son of God was with them. They came, therefore, and worshipped him, acknowledging him to be the Son of God. That is, they gave him homage, or honoured him as the Son of God. __________________________________________________________________
