Matthew 14:21

"They all ate and were filled. They took up twelve baskets full of that which remained left over from the broken pieces."

Key Reflection

Immediately after the miraculous feeding, where Jesus provided enough bread for five thousand people and had twelve baskets of leftovers, the disciples experienced a moment that encapsulated both wonder and prophetic significance. The twelve baskets filled with broken pieces symbolized the abundant provision and the completeness of God’s care, mirroring earlier biblical themes such as the manna in the wilderness (Exodus 16:27-30). For the original audience, this scene underscored the idea that despite their numerical weakness, they were part of a people chosen by God for whom He would always provide generously.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

Verse 21. Five thousand men, beside, etc. Probably the number might have been ten thousand. To feed so many was an act of great benevolence, and a stupendous miracle. The effect was such as might be expected. John says Joh 6:14 that they were convinced by it that he was that prophet that should come into the world; that is, the Messiah.
