Malachi 3:8

"From the days of your fathers you have turned away from my ordinances and have not kept them. Return to me, and I will return to you,” says the LORD of Armies. “But you say, ‘How shall we return?’"

Key Reflection

This passage highlights God’s complaint that Israel has consistently disobeyed His commandments over generations. It also presents an invitation for repentance, promising restoration upon genuine return to obedience, yet acknowledges the people's confusion about how to do so properly.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

Shall a man rob or cheat -, defraud God? God answers question by question, but thereby drives it home to the sinner’s soul, and appeals to his conscience. The conscience is steeled, and answers again, “In what?” God specifies two things only, obvious, patent, which, as being material things, they could not deny.
