Luke 7:20
"John, calling to himself two of his disciples, sent them to Jesus, saying, “Are you the one who is coming, or should we look for another?”"
Key Reflection
In first-century Judea, John the Baptist, imprisoned and awaiting execution, sent his disciples to Jesus to verify if he was indeed the promised Messiah (Mt 16:14; Jn 1:21). This request was a natural outgrowth of John's ministry, where he proclaimed repentance and baptism in preparation for the coming of the Messiah. For John’s audience, this moment highlighted the importance of correctly identifying the true messianic figure, given the expectations surrounding the promised deliverer.
