Luke 6:30

"To him who strikes you on the cheek, offer also the other; and from him who takes away your cloak, don’t withhold your coat also."

Key Reflection

In first-century Palestine, the act of striking a person on the cheek was a common form of humiliation and physical abuse, often used to assert dominance or punish perceived wrongs. The cloak, meanwhile, served as basic protection against the elements, but it could also be easily removed by an attacker. Jesus’ command in Luke 6:30 was radical; he instructed his followers to respond to such insults and attacks with non-violent resistance and generosity, essentially turning the other cheek and offering their last garment as well. This teaching challenged societal norms of self-defense and retaliation, calling for a higher moral standard of love and forgiveness among his disciples.
