In Luke 22:27, Jesus challenges the disciples' understanding of leadership within their future roles in his kingdom. By saying that those considered greater should "become as the younger" and that governing should be done "as one who serves," Jesus is subverting the common hierarchical expectations of first-century Jewish society where leaders often held positions of authority and were treated with deference. Instead, he emphasizes a servant-leadership model where even those in higher positions must humble themselves to serve, mirroring his own example of washing the disciples' feet just before this statement.
