John 13:13

"So when he had washed their feet, put his outer garment back on, and sat down again, he said to them, “Do you know what I have done to you?"

Key Reflection

In this passage, Jesus through the act of washing his disciples' feet symbolically demonstrates humility and service as a leader, challenging their understanding of authority and privilege. By asking if they know what he has done, Jesus prompts them to reflect on the nature of true leadership, which is rooted in serving others rather than wielding power.

Verse 13. Ye call me Master. Teacher. And Lord. This word is applied to one who rules, and is often given to God as being the Proprietor and Ruler of all things. It is given to Christ many hundred times in the New Testament, Ye say well, &c. Mt 23:8,10. So I am. That is, he was their Teacher and Instructor, and he was their Sovereign and King. {k} "call me Master and Lord" Mt 23:8-10; Php 2:11. __________________________________________________________________
