John 13:29

"Now nobody at the table knew why he said this to him."

Key Reflection

In first-century Judea, meals were significant social and religious events where hierarchy and status played crucial roles. At the Last Supper, as Jesus prepared his disciples for his impending arrest and crucifixion, he performed the act of foot washing—a gesture typically reserved for a slave or lowly servant. When Jesus said something to Judas at that moment, none of the other disciples grasped the gravity of what was unfolding. Their ignorance reflects both their immediate confusion and their inability to see the deeper significance of Jesus' actions and words, which pointed toward his ultimate sacrifice and the betrayal by one of their own.
