Luke 21:5

"for all these put in gifts for God from their abundance, but she, out of her poverty, put in all that she had to live on.”"

Key Reflection

In Luke 21:5, Jesus contrasts two women's offerings at the temple. The first woman puts in gifts from her abundance, symbolizing a typical offering from someone of means. However, the second woman, out of her poverty, offers all that she has to live onβ€”a gesture so significant it demonstrates her complete trust and dedication. This scene would have deeply moved the original audience, highlighting the importance of sincere faith over material wealth. In first-century Palestine, such an act would be particularly striking as it challenged the prevalent notion that one's giving should reflect their social status or financial standing.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

Verse 5. Goodly stones. Beautiful stones. Either referring to the large, square, and well-finished stones of which the eastern wall was built, or to the precious stones which might have been used in decorating the temple itself. See Barnes "Mr 13:1". Gifts. This word properly denotes anything devoted or dedicated to God. Anciently warriors dedicated to their gods the spoils of war--the shields, and helmets, and armour, and garments of those slain in battle. These were suspended in the temples.
