Leviticus 21:6

"“‘They shall not shave their heads or shave off the corners of their beards or make any cuttings in their flesh."

Key Reflection

Leviticus 21:6 establishes strict grooming standards for priests, prohibiting them from shaving their heads or trimming the edges of their beards or causing cuts in their skin as a form of self-mutilation. These rules reflect the broader cultural and religious context where such practices were often associated with mourning rituals or spiritualism, which the Israelites were to avoid to maintain their distinct holiness and separation from other nations. By adhering to these regulations, priests underscored their commitment to God and maintained a visible sign of their sacred calling within the community.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

The word here and inLeviticus 21:8rendered “bread”, is the same as is rendered food inLeviticus 3:11,Leviticus 3:16, etc., and meat inLeviticus 22:11. The reader of the English Bible should keep in view that bread, meat, and food, were nearly equivalent terms when our translation was made, and represent no distinctions that exist in the Hebrew.
