Judges 2:11

"After all that generation were gathered to their fathers, another generation arose after them who didn’t know the LORD, nor the work which he had done for Israel."

Key Reflection

In Judges 2:11, after the initial generation of Israelites who experienced direct divine interventions and miracles during their journey from Egypt to the Promised Land have passed away, a new generation emerges that is unfamiliar with these divine acts. This reflects the common pattern in ancient Near Eastern narratives where older generations often tell stories and maintain traditions for younger ones who need to be reminded of past experiences and teachings. The verse underscores the importance of passing on knowledge and faith from one generation to another, as the new Israelites risk losing their connection to God's guidance and history, much like Peter initially missed the profound lesson Jesus was teaching about service and humility.

And the children of Israel -Here begins the narrative of what really did happen “after the death of Joshua,” but of whichJudges 1:0conveys no hint. Israel served the Lord all the days of JoshuaJudges 2:7. But when Joshua was dead ... “the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the Lord, and served Baalim, and forsook the God of their fathers.” And then follows fromJudges 2:14to the end of the chapter, a summary of the whole contents of the book. Did evil in the sight of the Lord -Through this book and all the historical books, this is the regular phrase for falling into idolatry.
