Joshua 6:17

"At the seventh time, when the priests blew the trumpets, Joshua said to the people, “Shout, for the LORD has given you the city!"

Key Reflection

At the seventh and final march around Jericho, as the priests blew their trumpets, Joshua instructed the people to shout, for they had seen the fulfillment of God’s promise—the city was theirs. The original audience would have understood this moment as a divine act, confirming the power and sovereignty of Yahweh in the conquest of Canaan by signaling the fall of Jericho through a synchronized military and spiritual effort.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

Accursed -Better as in margin, (“devoted” (Leviticus 27:28note). In other cases the inhabitants only of the towns were slain; their cattle and property became the booty of the victors. But Jericho, as the first Canaanite city that was captured, was devoted by Israel as first-fruits to God, as a token that Israel received all the land from Him. Every living thing was put to death (Rahab and her household excepted) as a sacrifice to God, and the indestructible goods wereJoshua 6:19brought into the treasury of the sanctuary.
