Joshua 22:11

"When they came to the region near the Jordan, that is in the land of Canaan, the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh built an altar there by the Jordan, a great altar to look at."

Key Reflection

This passage highlights the tension between loyalty to God and maintaining cultural identity. The Israelites constructed a large altar near the Jordan as a visible symbol of their commitment to worship in the Promised Land, despite having settled on the east bank. This act was meant to reassure their brothers about their continued faithfulness to the covenant, even as they established themselves outside of Canaan's borders.
