John 4:4

"he left Judea and departed into Galilee."

Key Reflection

John 4:4 states that Jesus "left Judea and departed into Galilee." In the first century, Galilee was a region known for its rural and more conservative communities compared to the more urbanized and Hellenized areas of Judea, which included Jerusalem. The move from Judea to Galilee would have been significant as it marked a departure from the religious center where Jesus had faced increasing opposition, into a more receptive environment. This shift reflects a strategic decision by Jesus to expand his ministry beyond the immediate vicinity of Jerusalem and its political tensions.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

Verse 4. And he must needs go through Samaria. Samaria was between Judea and Galilee. The direct and usual way was to pass through Samaria. Sometimes, however, the Jews took a circuitous route on the east side of the Jordan, See Barnes "Mt 2:22". {b} "must needs go" Lu 2:49 __________________________________________________________________
