John 17:3

"even as you gave him authority over all flesh, so he will give eternal life to all whom you have given him."

Key Reflection

In John 17:3, Jesus speaks of an eternal life that he will impart to his followers, drawing a parallel with the authority the Father has over "all flesh." This verse reflects the divine sovereignty and the interconnectedness of Father and Son in their mission of salvation. The cultural context of first-century Judaism would have underscored the significance of this authority, as it was understood in terms of dominion over creation; Jesus, through his life and death, is seen to inherit and extend that same authority into granting eternal life, thus emphasizing his role as the divine agent in bringing about redemption for humanity.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

Verse 3. This is life eternal. This is the source of eternal life; or it is in this manner that it is to be obtained. The knowledge of God and of his Son Jesus Christ is itself a source of unspeakable and eternal joy. Comp. Joh 11:25; 6:63; 12:50. Might know thee. The word know here, as in other places, expresses more than a mere speculative acquaintance with the character and perfections of God. It includes all the impressions on the mind and life which a just view of God and of the Saviour is fitted to produce. It includes, of course, love, reverence, obedience, honour, gratitude, supreme affection.
