John 17:11

"All things that are mine are yours, and yours are mine, and I am glorified in them."

Key Reflection

In John 17:11, Jesus speaks of a profound unity with his disciples, highlighting the reciprocal nature of their relationship. By stating that "all things that are mine are yours, and yours are mine," Jesus underscores not only his possession of authority and resources but also the shared purpose and mission between him and his followers. This exchange reflects a deep interdependence where Jesus' glorification is found in his disciples' lives and experiences as they carry out his work. The cultural context of first-century Palestine would have emphasized the concept of possessions and power, making this statement particularly significant for understanding Jesus' role as both master and servant-leader.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

Verse 11. I am no more in the world. I have finished my work among men, and am about to leave the world. See Joh 17:4. These are in the world. They will be among wicked men and malignant foes. They will be subject to trials and persecutions. They will need the same protection which I could give them if I were with them. Keep. Preserve, defend, sustain them in trials, and save them from apostasy. Through thine own name. Our translators seem to have understood this expression as meaning "keep by thy power," but this probably is not its meaning.
