John 15:13

"“This is my commandment, that you love one another, even as I have loved you."

Key Reflection

In the first-century Jewish context, John 15:13 emphasizes the profound nature of Christ's commandment through a vivid and relatable analogy. Drawing on the familiar imagery of familial and communal life, Jesus likens his love for his disciples to that of a parent for their children, setting an unattainable yet transformative standard of mutual affection and care. This verse challenges the audience by placing their actions within the context of divine grace and sacrificial love, inviting them to mirror the depth and extent of Christ's own love.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

Verse 13. Greater love hath, &c. No higher expression of love could be given. Life is the most valuable object we possess; and when a man is willing to lay that down for his friends or his country, it shows the utmost extent of love. Even this love for friends has been rarely witnessed. A very few cases--like that of Damon and Pythias--have occurred where a man was willing to save the life of his friend by giving his own.
