Job 8:22

"He will still fill your mouth with laughter, your lips with shouting."

Key Reflection

In Job 8:22, Bildad, one of Job's friends, asserts that if Job returns to God, he will be filled with joy and laughter once again. This verse reflects the cultural understanding of divine retribution and blessing; it suggests that those who remain faithful or repent will experience a reversal of their current suffering, being clothed in gladness while their adversaries are humiliated. The imagery of filling one's mouth with laughter and shouting conveys a complete restoration to a state of joy and celebration, which was a common way to express divine favor and the restoration of blessings in ancient Near Eastern literature.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

They that hate thee shall be clothed with shame -When they see your returning prosperity, and the evidences of the divine favor. They will then be ashamed that they regarded you as a hypocrite, and that they reproached you in your trials. And the dwelling-place of the wicked ... -The wicked shall be destroyed, and his family shall pass away. That is, God will favor the righteous, but punish the wicked. This opinion the friends of Job maintain all along, and by this they urge him to forsake his sins, repent, and return to God.
