Job 41:9

"Lay your hand on him. Remember the battle, and do so no more."

Key Reflection

In the context of Job 41:9, the speaker is addressing the formidable leviathan, a mythical creature symbolizing overwhelming power and chaos. The original audience would understand that attempting to subdue such a beast is futile; the speaker advises laying hand upon it not in an act of physical restraint but rather in acknowledging its strength and wisely stepping back from the struggle. This advice reflects the broader theme of Job’s narrative, where wrestling with God’s sovereignty and the limits of human understanding are central.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

Behold, the hope of him is in vain -That is, the hope of taking him is vain. Shall not one be cast down even at the sight of him? -So formidable is his appearance, that the courage of him who would attack him is daunted, and his resolution fails. This agrees well also with the crocodile. There is perhaps scarcely any animal whose appearance would be more likely to deter one from attacking him.
