Job 38:26

"Who has cut a channel for the flood water, or the path for the thunderstorm,"

Key Reflection

In Job 38:26, God is questioning who has established channels for flood waters and paths for thunderstorms. This rhetorical question highlights God's role as the sovereign creator who controls natural phenomena like rainfall and storms. For the original audience of Israelites, this would underscore God’s power over even the most unpredictable forces in nature, reinforcing his authority and the idea that he manages the world with precision and purpose.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

To cause it to rain on the earth, where no man is -This is designed to heighten the conception of the power of God. It could not be pretended that this was done by man, for the rain was caused to fall in the desolate regions where no one dwelt. In the lonely desert, in the wastes remote from the dwellings of people, the rain is sent down, evidently by the providential care of God, and far beyond the reach of the agency of man. There is very great beauty in this whole description of God as superintending the falling rain far away from the homes of people, and in those lonely wastes pouring down the waters, that the tender herb may spring up, and the flowers bloom under his hand.
