Job 38:10

"when I made clouds its garment, and wrapped it in thick darkness,"

Key Reflection

In the ancient Near East, the creation narrative was a central theme in literature and religion, often depicting Yahweh as the master craftsman who shaped the world through powerful acts of divine will. In Job 38:10, God describes His role in creating clouds to clothe and conceal the earth in darkness, highlighting both His creative power and the mysterious nature of His presence. This imagery would have resonated with the original audience, emphasizing that God's control extends over even the most obscure and unknowable aspects of creation.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

And brake up for it my decreed place -Margin, “established my decree upon it.” So Herder, “I fixed my decrees upon it.” Luther renders it, “Da ich ihm den Lauf brach mit meinem Damm” - “then I broke its course with my barrier.” Umbreit renders it, “I measured out to it my limits;” that is, the limits or bounds which I judged to be proper. So the Vulgate,“Circumdedi illud terminis meis”- “I surrounded it with my limits,” or with such limits as I chose to affix.
