Job 34:28

"because they turned away from following him, and wouldn’t pay attention to any of his ways,"

Key Reflection

In Job 34:28, the speaker laments that the poor's cries for help reach God, yet their afflictions continue because those who should be seeking divine guidance have turned away from following Him and disregarded His ways. This verse highlights a stark contrast between God’s willingness to hear the cries of the oppressed and the stubborn disregard of those in positions of privilege or influence, emphasizing the consequences of choosing rebellion over obedience.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

So that they cause the cry of the poor to come unto him -- Their character is that of oppressors. They take away the rights of the poor; strip away their property without any just claims, and cause them to pour out their lamentations before God. And he heareth the cry of the afflicted -They oppress the poor so that they appeal unto him, but God hears their cry, and brings punishment upon the oppressor. This is “a general remark” thrown in here, meaning that God “always” regards the cry of the oppressed.
