Job 30:31

"My skin grows black and peels from me. My bones are burned with heat."

Key Reflection

In Job 30:31, the verses vividly describe the physical degradation and suffering that Job experiences. His skin becomes darkened and begins to peel, a sign of severe illness or possibly exposure to a harsh environment. The imagery of his bones being "burned with heat" suggests an intense internal or external condition, perhaps fever or some kind of debilitating disease. This portrayal not only reflects the physical torment Job endures but also serves as a metaphor for the spiritual and emotional distress he faces, emphasizing the severity of his suffering in a way that resonates deeply within the narrative of the book.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

My harp also is turned to mourning -What formerly gave cheerful sounds, now gives only notes of plaintiveness and lamentation. The harp was probably an instrument originally designed to give sounds of joy. For a description of it, see the notes atIsaiah 5:12. And my organ -The form of what is here called the organ, is not certainly known. The wordעגב‛ûgâbis doubtless fromעגב‛âgab, “to breathe, to blow”; and most probably the instrument hero intended was the pipe. For a description of it, see the notes atIsaiah 5:12. This instrument, also, was played, as would appear, on joyous occasions, but Job now says that it was turned to grief. All that had been joyous with him had fled.
