Job 30:12

"For he has untied his cord, and afflicted me; and they have thrown off restraint before me."

Key Reflection

In Job 30:12, Job describes a sense of being abandoned by God. The imagery of "untied his cord" (ויתר את חבלי, ויתר את חבלי) suggests that God has loosened the protective bonds or support that once held him up, leaving him vulnerable and afflicted. This figure of speech implies that without divine strength and protection, Job is exposed to the cruelty and ridicule of those around him ("they have thrown off restraint before me"). The cultural context of ancient Israel, where physical constraints often symbolized freedom or restraint, underscores the depth of Job's despair and his feeling of being left without support.
