Job 21:23

"“Shall any teach God knowledge, since he judges those who are high?"

Key Reflection

Job 21:23 states, "One dies in his full strength, being wholly at ease and quiet." This verse presents a stark contrast to the idea of the wicked prospering indefinitely, challenging the notion that the righteous always suffer while the wicked flourish. In ancient Near Eastern culture, death was often seen as an opportunity for divine judgment or recompense, suggesting that even those who die in their prime might still be subject to God's scrutiny and justice. This verse invites reflection on the unpredictable nature of life and the certainty of ultimate accountability before God.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

One dieth in his full strength -Margin, “very perfection,” or, “in the strength of his perfection.” The meaning is, that he dies in the very prime and vigor of life, surrounded with everything that can contribute to comfort. Of the truth of this position, no one can doubt; and the wonder is, that the friends of Job had not seen or admitted it. Being wholly at ease and quiet -That is, having everything to make them happy, so far as external circumstances are concerned. He is borne down by no calamities; he is overwhelmed by no sudden and heavy judgments.
