Job 21:2

"Then Job answered,"

Key Reflection

Job 21:2 begins with, "Then Job answered," indicating that he is responding to his friends who have been criticizing him for his suffering. This opening line sets the stage for Job to articulate his own perspective on why he is enduring such trials, challenging the assumptions made by his companions about the direct correlation between piety and prosperity in the face of God's sovereignty. In this context, Job prepares to present a defense that delves into the complexities of divine justice, revealing that the lives of wicked people can be just as prosperous and long-lived as those who are righteous, thus questioning the simplistic notions proposed by his friends.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

Hear diligently -Hebrew “Hearing hear” - that is, hear attentively. What he was about to say was worthy of their solemn consideration. And let this be your consolations -That is, “You came to me for the professed purpose of giving “me” consolation. In that you have wholly failed. You have done nothing to sustain or comfort me; but all that you have said has only tended to exasperate me, and to increase my sorrow. If you will now hear me attentively, I will take that as a consolation, and it shall be in the place of what I had a right to expect from you.
