Job 15:8

"“Are you the first man who was born? Or were you brought out before the hills?"

Key Reflection

In the context of ancient Near Eastern culture, Job 15:8 challenges the young friend Eliphaz's assumption that Job is claiming divine wisdom. By asking if Job was born before the hills were formed, Eliphaz suggests that such profound knowledge should have predated even the oldest natural features on earth. This rhetorical question underscores the belief that true wisdom comes from God and not from human experience or intelligence alone, a perspective central to maintaining the integrity of the theological framework in which the book of Job operates.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

Hast thou heard the secret of God? -literally, “in the secret of God hast thou heard” -הסודhasôd. The word rendered “secret” (סודsôd) means properly a “couch” or “cushion,” on which one reclines - whether for sleep or at a table, or as a divan. Hence, it means a divan, or circle of persons sitting together for familiar conversation,Jeremiah 6:11;Jeremiah 15:17; or of judges, counsellors, or advisers for consultation, as the word “divan” is now used in Oriental countries;Psalms 89:7;Jeremiah 33:18. Then it means any consultation, counsel, familiar conversation, or intimacy;Psalms 55:14;Proverbs 15:22.
