Job 15:33

"It will be accomplished before his time. His branch will not be green."

Key Reflection

In Job 15:33, the imagery of a tree being cut down before its proper time and failing to produce healthy foliage conveys a profound message about the temporary nature of wicked prosperity. This verse suggests that just as a premature harvest results in unripe grapes, so too does sinfulness lead to an untimely demise or significant hardship, preventing the individual from achieving full fruitfulness in life. The image paints a vivid picture of divine retribution, where wickedness is ultimately punished, and the prosperous period is cut short—a stark contrast to the eternal rewards promised to the righteous.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

He shall shake off his unripe grape as the vine -The idea here is, that the wicked man shall be like a vine that casts off its grapes while they are yet sour and green, and brings none to perfection; compare the notes atIsaiah 18:5. Scott renders this, “As when the vine her half-grown berries showers, Or poisoned olive her unfolding flowers.” It would seem from this passage that the vine might be so blasted by a hot wind or other cause, as to cast its unripe grapes to the earth. The employment of a figure of this kind to illustrate an idea supposes that such a case was familiar to those who were addressed.
