Jeremiah 7:10

"Will you steal, murder, commit adultery, swear falsely, burn incense to Baal, and walk after other gods that you have not known,"

Key Reflection

The people of Judah were being challenged by Jeremiah’s words to confront their deeply ingrained sins, which included stealing, murder, adultery, and idolatry. These offenses were not just personal vices but also encompassed the broader social and religious practices of the time. For the original audience, this list was a stark reminder that their covenant relationship with Yahweh was being violated through these acts, including the worship of Baal—a foreign deity—and engaging in other gods they had not known before. This text underscores the severity of their spiritual rebellion and the dire consequences that could result from such practices, setting the stage for Jeremiah’s prophetic warnings about impending judgment.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

We are delivered -Jeremiah accuses them of trusting in the ceremonial of the temple instead of leading holy lives. “You break,” he says, “the Ten Commandments, and then you go to the Temple; and when the service is over you say, We are delivered. We have atoned for our past actions, and may start afresh with easy minds upon a new course of wickedness.”
