Jeremiah 6:6

"Arise! Let’s go up by night, and let’s destroy her palaces.”"

Key Reflection

In Jeremiah 6:6, the command to “Arise! Let’s go up by night, and let’s destroy her palaces” comes in a context of divine judgment against Jerusalem. The original audience would have understood this as a prophecy from Yahweh instructing the people to engage in nocturnal destruction of the city’s strongholds. This imagery reflects the historical reality of siege tactics common during that period, where attackers often struck by surprise at night to gain an advantage over fortified cities.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

Hew ye down trees -Rather, her trees: for the simple purpose of clearing the approaches. Cast a mount -literally, pour: the earth was emptied out of the baskets, in which it was carried to the required spot upon the backs of laborers. Wholly -Or, “She “is the city” that is visited: “Wholly oppression” is “in the midst of her!” She is visited, -i. e., punished; she is ripe for punishment.
