Jeremiah 51:32

"One runner will run to meet another, and one messenger to meet another, to show the king of Babylon that his city is taken on every quarter."

Key Reflection

In Jeremiah 51:32, the prophet describes a scene where runners and messengers hurry to convey crucial information to King Cyrus of Persia about the fall of Babylon from multiple directions. This vivid imagery would have resonated with Jeremiah's contemporaries by painting a picture of rapid and widespread communication—a stark contrast to the slow and cumbersome systems of that time. The original audience would have understood this as evidence of divine intervention, highlighting how swiftly and comprehensively God’s judgment was being carried out against Babylon, a city once seen as invincible.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

The passages are stopped -The ferries are seized, occupied. The historians state that when Cyrus captured the city his troops moved down the bed of the river and occupied all these ferries, finding at each of them the gates negligently left open. See theDaniel 5:1note. The reeds -literally, the marshes or pools, which formed an important part of the defenses of Babylon, were dried up as completely as a piece of wood would be consumed by fire.
