Jeremiah 13:1

"Jeremiah."

Key Reflection

In Jeremiah 13:1, God commands Jeremiah to buy a belt and wear it on his waist as a symbolic act. This action serves as a visual metaphor for the nation of Judah's fate; just as the belt will become soiled and useless over time, so too would Judah's covenant with Yahweh deteriorate and fail due to their persistent disobedience and idolatry. The cultural context highlights how such a task would have been menial, emphasizing the lowly state that Jeremiah’s people were destined for through their own actions.

A linen girdle -The appointed dress of the priestly order (Leviticus 16:4, ...). Put it not in water -i. e., do not wash it, and so let it represent the deep-grained pollution of the people.
