Isaiah 51:18

"Awake, awake! Stand up, Jerusalem, you who have drunk from the LORD’s hand the cup of his wrath. You have drunken the bowl of the cup of staggering, and drained it."

Key Reflection

Awake, awake! Stand up, Jerusalem, for you have drunk from the LORD’s hand the cup of his wrath, which caused you to stagger and reel like someone who has consumed too much wine. This image would have deeply resonated with the original audience, as it vividly portrayed the city's suffering due to divine judgment, using the relatable metaphor of drunkenness to convey the intensity of the calamity.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

There is none to guide her -The image here is taken from the condition of one who is under the influence of an intoxicating draught, and who needs some one to sustain and guide him. The idea is, than among all the inhabitants of Jerusalem in the time of the calamity, there was none who could restore to order the agitated and distracted affairs of the nation. All its wisdom was destroyed; its counsels perplexed; its power overcome. All the sons whom she hath brought forth -All the inhabitants of Jerusalem.
