Isaiah 45:13

"I have made the earth, and created man on it. I, even my hands, have stretched out the heavens. I have commanded all their army."

Key Reflection

Isaiah 45:13 poignantly underscores God's omnipotence and sovereignty by declaring, "I have made the earth, and created man on it. I, even my hands, have stretched out the heavens. I have commanded all their army." This verse reveals that God alone is the Creator, with power to bring forth both earthly and celestial realms. The imagery of stretching out the heavens with his own hands emphasizes God’s unmatched might—He not only created but also directly commands the forces of nature, asserting His supreme authority over all creation.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

I have raised him up -That is. Cyrus (see the notes atIsaiah 41:2). In righteousness -InIsaiah 41:2, he is called ‘the righteous man.’ He had raised him up to accomplish his own righteous plans. It does not necessarily mean that Cyrus was a righteous man (see the notes atIsaiah 41:2). And I will direct all his ways -Margin, ‘Make straight.’ This is the meaning of the Hebrew word (see the notes atIsaiah 40:4). The sense here is, I will make his paths all smooth and level, that is, whatever obstacles are in his way I will remove, and give him eminent success. He shall build my city -Jerusalem.
