Isaiah 30:5

"For their princes are at Zoan, and their ambassadors have come to Hanes."

Key Reflection

The people of Israel had sent their leaders to seek support from Egypt, specifically to the city of Zoan (which was known as a center for Egyptian government and administration) and dispatched messengers to Hanes (a city in southern Egypt). The original audience would have understood this as a sign of their desperation and lack of trust in God. By seeking help from a foreign power rather than relying on divine deliverance, they demonstrated their faithlessness and the coming shame they would experience.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

They were all ashamed -That is, all the legates or ambassadors. When they came into Egypt, they found them either unwilling to enter into an alliance, or unable to render them any aid, and they were ashamed that they had sought their assistance rather than depend on God (compareJeremiah 2:36).
