Isaiah 1:24

"Therefore the Lord, GOD of Armies, the Mighty One of Israel, says: “Ah, I will get relief from my adversaries, and avenge myself on my enemies."

Key Reflection

Isaiah 1:24 reveals God's resolve to address the wickedness He has endured from His people and their adversaries. The verse captures God's emotional response—He expresses a desire for relief from distress, which in this case is vengeance against those who have wronged Him and His chosen people. This passage reflects the cultural understanding that divine wrath and retribution are integral aspects of justice, illustrating how God's patience reaches its limit as He prepares to act decisively on behalf of righteousness.

Therefore saith the Lord ... -The prophet having stated the guilt of the nation, proceeds to show the consequences of their crimes; or to foretell what would happen. The name of God is repeated, to attract attention; to fill the mind with awe; and to give emphasis to the solemn sentence which was about to be uttered. The Lord -אדון'âdôn. This word properly denotes master, lord, owner.Genesis 24:9: “lord over his whole house.”1 Kings 16:24: “owner of the hill Samaria.” It is applied here to Yahweh, not as a special title, or as one of the names which he assumes to himself, but as owner, proprietor, master, ruler of the nation.
