Hebrews 7:4

"without father, without mother, without genealogy, having neither beginning of days nor end of life, but made like the Son of God), remains a priest continually."

Key Reflection

Hebrews 7:4 describes Melchizedek, who is portrayed as unique and distinct from the Levitical priesthood. He is "without father, without mother, without genealogy," which suggests that his origins are mysterious and not tied to any earthly lineage. This unusual description implies that he stands outside the typical human boundaries, making him akin to the Son of God. As such, Melchizedek remains a perpetual priest, serving as a foreshadowing of Jesus Christ, who also has an eternal priesthood without the limitations of human ancestry or lifespan.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

Verse 4 Now consider how great this man was. The object of the apostle was to exalt the rank and dignity of Melchizedek. The Jews had a profound veneration for Abraham; and if it could be shown that Melchizedek was superior to Abraham, then it would be easy to demonstrate the superiority of Christ, as a priest, to all who descended from Abraham. Accordingly he argues, that he to whom even the patriarch Abraham showed so much respect, must have had an exalted rank.
