Ezekiel 7:13

"The time has come! The day draws near. Don’t let the buyer rejoice, nor the seller mourn; for wrath is on all its multitude."

Key Reflection

In Ezekiel 7:13, the prophet declares that a momentous day of divine judgment is at hand for Jerusalem. The original audience would have understood this as a direct warning to both those who bought and sold goods during times of economic distress. The text suggests that neither the buyer’s gain nor the seller’s loss should be celebrated or mourned, as wrath has come upon all involved—highlighting the impartiality of God's judgment across social classes in ancient Israel.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

Although they were yet alive -Though they be yet among the living. Which shall not return ... -He (i. e. the seller) shall not return; and, every man living in his iniquity, they shall gather no strength. Exile being the punishment of iniquity, the exiles were said to “live in their iniquity.”
