Exodus 4:6

"“This is so that they may believe that the LORD, the God of their fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has appeared to you.”"

Key Reflection

In Exodus 4:6, Moses is instructed by God to perform a miraculous sign—turning water into blood. This act serves as divine authentication, affirming that the LORD, the God of their ancestors Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, has appeared to Moses. This context highlights the importance of signs in establishing God's authority and validating His chosen messenger. The cultural backdrop is significant: in a world where miracles were often seen as proof of one's deity or divine favor, this sign would resonate deeply with the Israelites' understanding of their historical relationship with the LORD, reinforcing Moses' legitimacy and ensuring that his message was not dismissed out of hand.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

Leprous -The instantaneous production and cure of the most malignant and subtle disease known to the Israelites was a sign of their danger if they resisted the command, and of their deliverance if they obeyed it. The infliction and cure were always regarded as special proofs of a divine intervention.
