Exodus 16:27

"Six days you shall gather it, but on the seventh day is the Sabbath. In it there shall be none.”"

Key Reflection

The Israelites were instructed to gather manna each day, but they must refrain from collecting on the seventh day, which was their Sabbath. This practice underscored the importance of the Sabbath as a day of rest and separation from work, reflecting God’s own pattern of creating the world in six days and resting on the seventh. For the original audience, this command highlighted both the practical aspect of providing sustenance while maintaining sacred time, and the theological significance of obeying divine ordinances.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

There went out some of the people -This was an act of willful disobedience. It is remarkable, being the first violation of the express command, that it was not visited by a signal chastisement: the rest and peace of the “holy Sabbath” were not disturbed by a manifestation of wrath.
