Ecclesiastes 2:1

"Ecclesiastes."

Key Reflection

In the opening line of Ecclesiastes, the author introduces himself by stating his name—“Ecclesiastes.” This self-reference was likely meant to establish credibility and authority, indicating that he was someone who had thoroughly examined life’s meaning through experience and reflection. The original audience would have recognized him as a wise man or king, given the traditional role of sages in providing wisdom literature in ancient Near Eastern cultures.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

Solomon’s trial of God’s second gift, namely, riches, and the enjoyment which riches supply; this brought him to the sane result (compareEcclesiastes 1:12). Comparing Solomon’s action withLuke 12:16-21, it must be remembered that Solomon’s object was the acquisition of wisdom, not self-indulgence, and that he did not fail to look forward to the certainty of death overtaking him.
