Daniel 7:14

"“I saw in the night visions, and behold, there came with the clouds of the sky one like a son of man, and he came even to the Ancient of Days, and they brought him near before him."

Key Reflection

In Daniel 7:14, the prophet describes a visionary scene where a figure resembling a human ("one like a son of man") emerges from the clouds and approaches the Ancient of Days, likely referring to God. This imagery would have been striking for the original audience, as it combined elements of both earthly and divine authority, suggesting the coming of a messianic king who would rule with enduring power—a concept that resonated deeply in the context of Babylonian oppression and the longing for deliverance among the exiled Jews.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

And there was given him dominion -That is, by him who is represented as the “Ancient of days.” The fair interpretation of this is, that he received the dominion from him. This is the uniform representation in the New Testament. CompareMatthew 28:18;Joh 3:35;1 Corinthians 15:27. The word dominion here means rule or auhority - such as a prince exercises. He was set over a kingdom as a prince or ruler. And glory -That is the glory or honor appropriate to one at the head of such an empire. And a kingdom -That is, he would reign. He would have sovereignty. The nature and the extent of this kingdom is immediately designated as one that would be universal and perpetual.
