Acts 8:4

"But Saul ravaged the assembly, entering into every house and dragged both men and women off to prison."

Key Reflection

In Acts 8:4, we see a vivid description of Saul's zealous persecution of the early Christian community in Jerusalem. This verse paints a picture of Saul's relentless efforts to root out believers by entering homes and arresting both men and women, effectively silencing the fledgling church. The cultural context of first-century Palestine underscores how such actions were seen as necessary to maintain social order; Saul's methods, however, highlighted the severity and brutality with which early Christians faced opposition, setting the stage for Peter's missionary journey to Samaria and beyond.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

Verse 4. Went every where. That is, they travelled through the various regions where they were scattered. In all places to which they came, they preached the word. Preaching the word. Greek, Evangelizing, or announcing the good news of the message of mercy, or the word of God. It is not the usual word which is rendered preach, but means simply announcing the good news of salvation. There is no evidence, nor is there any probability, that all these persons were ordained to preach.
